Have you ever wondered what truly moves the world forward? Whether it’s an invention that changes how we live, a bold new idea that disrupts industries, or a group of people reshaping entire communities, there’s always someone at the forefront: the pioneer. In the world of faith, these pioneers are known as apostles, and their willingness to take risks, dream big, and create fresh strategies is what keeps the Kingdom of God growing and thriving. If you’ve ever felt a tug to do something new, something daring, or something that feels just a bit risky—read on. You might just find yourself in this story!
Pioneers are everywhere, though sometimes we forget to recognize them. The Wright brothers took to the skies when everyone thought flight was a fantasy. Alexander Graham Bell’s crazy contraption lets us speak to loved ones across the globe. And, yes—Elon Musk is pushing us to a future with electric cars and reusable rockets. But what about in the Church? Apostles are those unique pioneers who don’t fear failure because their eyes are on a bigger reward: seeing God’s Kingdom advance. Where most people crave comfort, apostles are itching to break new ground, always pushing for more—even when it seems impossible.
Let’s get practical for a moment. Back in 2013, DOVE International—a network of 250 churches—dreamed big. They believed God was calling them to grow to 1,000 churches by 2020. That meant quadrupling in just seven years! Instead of letting this vision remain just a dream, they broke it down: what if each church could plant just one new church in three and a half years? Then those new churches would do the same. Suddenly, the big vision became a chewable chunk. This strategy didn’t play out perfectly step for step, but by 2020, DOVE had grown to 1,060 churches. Not because every detail went according to plan, but because people united around a shared vision, believed, and moved forward together. Sometimes, faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about being willing to get moving anyway.
Pioneers never just watch and wait. They stir things up! They introduce new ministries, revive lost truths, and bring fresh energy where it’s needed most. Think of Paul, the apostle—he would do anything (short of sin!) to reach and win people for Jesus: “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” That’s the heartbeat of an apostle. They carry a personal sense of calling so strong, it drives them through opposition, out of their comfort zones, and beyond what’s ‘normal’ or ‘safe.’
Let’s bring this to life with a story. Imagine two potato farmers in Ireland during the 1840s famine. Both have lost almost everything. News comes of a chance to start over in America. One farmer, clinging to security, stays put. The other—driven by something deep inside—takes the risk, boards a ship, and starts a new life. That’s the spirit every pioneer carries: not loving risk for risk’s sake, but willing to take it for something greater. This is the same energy that has built nations, transformed economies, and, in the church, sparked revivals.
Now, why does the church need this pioneer spirit? Simple—because the world keeps changing. Traditions are comforting, but they can also anchor us in the past. Apostles keep things moving forward, making sure each generation finds new ways to share timeless truths. Without apostles, church can get stuck—preserving the past but missing out on the present. It’s like trying to drive a car by only looking in the rearview mirror.
Here’s something important: pioneers can’t do it alone. Apostle types are great at vision, but often need pastors and teachers alongside them to care for people and keep everyone grounded. Larry Kreider, a leader in DOVE, is famous for saying he’s not a counselor—he just wants to get on with the mission! Thankfully, his wife and team fill in those gaps. It’s this balance of gifts that helps any big movement not just grow fast, but grow healthy and strong. Leaders need to lead, but they also need to be cared for.
Pioneers are most fulfilled when they’re raising up other leaders. Paul, for example, didn’t just make followers—he built teams that could carry on the mission without him. Apostolic believers aren’t content to just ‘attend’ church—they want to be sent, equipped, and make a difference themselves. Each apostolic movement may look a little different (just like every snowflake is unique!), but together, they keep the church moving, adapting, and thriving.
What’s the secret sauce? It’s risk. Pioneers embrace it. They don’t just tolerate uncertainty—they use it as the fuel for growth and change. The United States is called a nation of risk takers, built by immigrants who crossed oceans for a better life. In business, pioneers like Elon Musk move where the opportunity (and the risk) is greatest. In faith, apostles boldly step into the unknown—always driven by a love for God’s Kingdom and a vision of what could be.
Maybe you’re reading this and recognizing a bit of that apostolic, pioneering spirit in yourself. Maybe you feel called to something new, something that hasn’t been done before. The world—and the church—needs people just like you. If you’re ready to step out, there are places to learn, grow and get equipped. So, don’t let fear of risk hold you back. As the pioneers before you have shown, the greatest rewards await those willing to move first.
The world needs you more than you know. 🌍
